Real Nappies, Real Life: Rachel’s Thoughts on a Wet Spring Morning

It’s raining again, no surprise there. This morning as I made the kids their breakfast I was thinking about what I have to do today. Wait in for the postman (I’m hoping our new FuzziBunz One Size Elite will arrive today!), post a parcel of my own, tidy the living room, a couple of loads of laundry. I remembered how everybody said I was crazy when I first told them we would be using cloth nappies, nearly three years ago. I was a bit worried about it myself. We were living in a one bedroom flat at the time with no tumble dryer but I was determined to make it work. “How on earth will you get the nappies dry in your flat?” and “What about the poo, how can you put that in your washing machine?” were the most commonly asked questions. Honestly, I didn’t know. I was hoping we’d be able to muddle through, just as I planned to muddle through parenting in general.

I’m so happy to say that we did muddle through and it really hasn’t been that difficult. Cloth nappies aren’t just terries and pins anymore, there are some incredibly sophisticated fabrics and designs out there now. A cotton terry nappy would have taken me at least 24 hours to dry in the flat, possibly up to 48 hours when it was cold. Pocket nappies with modern fabrics like minky dry in a flash on a clothes airer. It would have been difficult to find space to dry terries but FuzziBunz One Size Elite are great space-savers because they’re shaped nappies, not huge flat nappies. The inserts are made of minky which dries quickly anyway but they dry even more quickly because you can take them out of the pocket and hang them separately. Because they dry quickly, you can tidy them away quickly, which is perfect when space is limited.

Now, we’re living in a house with a garden so I use the washing line as often as possible. I love to see a line of pretty nappies blowing in the breeze. No such luck for me today though. With the weather we’re having at the moment, I’ll be lucky to get the nappies on the line any time this month! Still, I’m quite happy to see an airer of fluff at the top of stairs, it makes me smile whenever I pass it.

As for the poo, how do I deal with that? Once you’re a mum your idea of “yuk” changes somewhat! You find yourself covered in all manner of yucky things on a daily basis, so tipping a poo down the toilet from a nappy every now and then is mild in comparison. If you’re particularly squeamish you can use a flushable liner but I’ve always found it fine without. FuzziBunz are lined with fleece, which is wonderful at keeping baby feeling dry and I’ve also found it to be really good when disposing of poo, especially as baby gets older. Another big advantage to pocket nappies is that the inserts don’t get covered in mess – the only bit to get dirty is the inside layer of the nappy, which makes cleaning up an awful lot easier and quicker.

After we’d had breakfast and I’d cleaned up another kind of mess (porridge with an 8 month old is fun but hardly what I’d call tidy!), I put my first load of washing in the machine. A nappy wash, my favourite kind! I always start with a quick cold rinse to get the nappies nice and wet before the main wash. After the wash I do an extra rinse to make sure all of the detergent is properly washed out. I’ve found that if I miss the extra rinses the nappies don’t get properly clean and that’s not something I want to happen.

After the wash had finished, my 2 and a half year old helped me sort out the nappies – pretty coloured pocket outers on one airer and inserts on another. The inserts can go close to the radiator to dry and the outers will dry quickly wherever I put them. My daughter loves to ask me what all the different colours are called and repeats each one after me, savouring the new words. Tooti Frooti and Crushed Berries are her current favourites, Tooti Frooti for the “funny name” and Crushed Berries for the vibrant pink, her colour of choice at the moment. I’m excited to see what she’ll make of the new Strawberry Delight and Whimsical Whales, when it arrives!

Now, it’s time for me to put more washing in the machine, tidy the living room (or perhaps I’ll leave that until the kids are asleep this evening) and hope for a break in the rain so we can race to the Post Office. I think we’re going to get wet!

FuzziBunz Elite Cloth Nappy Review on 11 months old baby

First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzibunz Europe, who gave away this nappy as art of their Facebook giveaway party.

The nappy arrived very quickly and went immediately into the wash to be put on the very next day.

We are already using the one size regular FuzziBunz, so I want to show you the differences first, before talking about the Elite itself.
Here are some pictures that show the Elite and the visible differences to the previous OS FuzziBunz:

If you are looking for the buttons of the leg elastics, you won’t find them anymore. They have been moved to the inside of the pocket. This means that the buttons are not touching baby’s skin anymore. I thought it would be difficult to reach and change the settings but really, it is not any different than before. Also the elastic cannot fall out of its little pocket anymore after a wash cycle. This also eliminates the “fiddleling around” of putting it back inside.
